Description The EHS Manager leads the development, implementation, and management of Environmental Health and Safety programs across distribution and manufacturing centers with a focus on creating a proactive safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing safety incidents, developing and delivering training programs, and maintaining emergency response protocols.
Compensation Data: Exempt salary based on experience. Incentive compensation eligible position.
Travel: Travel to other facilities based upon business need
Location/Schedule: Onsite at Grand Rapids, MI facility . M-F, with flexible hours
Key Responsibilities - Promotes and embeds a “safety first” culture organization-wide by identifying risks and mitigating preventable injuries or illnesses.
- Ensures full compliance with OSHA standards and federal/state safety regulations; keeps all teams informed and trained in their requirements.
- Designs, implements, and regularly updates comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Conducts safety training for supervisors and employees, organizes seminars, and perform regular safety audits.
- Inspect work environments to confirm that physical plants, warehouses, and processes align with safety standards.
- Monitors the use of hazardous chemicals and machinery, ensuring machine guards and safety procedures are properly followed.
- Leads accident investigations, maintains documentation, and recommends corrective actions.
- Develops and manages emergency response plans; conducts emergency drills and readiness assessments.
- Maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS), prepares and submits OSHA reports, manages accident and workers' compensation reporting, and oversees preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Leads efforts to ensure compliance with SDS and hazardous materials documentation across multiple departments.
- Manage the acquisition and maintenance of safety equipment (e.g., safety glasses, AEDs, first aid kits).
Education & Qualifications What you will need to succeed: - A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Health, or a closely related field required. A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred.
- Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in a warehouse distribution environment.
Competencies - A strong background in hazardous materials handling, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and OSHA regulations.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state workplace safety laws and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to lead during emergencies with composure and clear decision-making.
- Understanding of the legal aspects, implications, and repercussions of workplace accidents.
- Familiarity with industrial machinery, equipment, and hazardous materials.
- Excellent evaluation skills to assess talent, training effectiveness, and safety initiatives.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and represent the company positively in interactions.
- Strong interpersonal skills: ability to build relationships at all levels and use appropriate humor to create a positive work atmosphere.
- Ability to mentor others and build culture according to the BFG “GROW” values.
- Collaborative working style and strong communication abilities.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and multi-tasking capabilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
